Astronomy part 2 Flashcards
the north star
very important star for celestial navigation
if you are in the northern hemisphere and you are looking at the north star it means you are facing north
it is also called Polaris
helps you find where you are going
photosphere
surface of the sun
very hot
causes gases that are opaque to become transparent
light and radiation escapes
chromosphere
inner atmosphere 60 000 degrees hotter that the photosphere
solar winds
flow of charged particles from the sun go on the suns surface
solar storms
sun can send large blasts of energy- magnetic feilds to earth
sun growing
when hydrogen combines in the suns core it creates nuclear fission that creates helium which is brighter and denser so it accumulates in core causing the sun to get hotter causing it to grow
the sun will grow until it reaches a balance between expansion and gravity
can grow to be 10 billion years (5 now)
moon
temperatures extreme no atmosphere no liquid water 1/6 of the gravity or earth a natural satellite
highlands
mountaines that are high and rilles, valleys
Cratures
can be up to 2500km across formed my meteorites or volcano
Marina
dark filled with lava because of meteorite crash
thought to be seas (wrong)
movement of the moon
moon orbits the sun 271 times in three days for earth
moon turns on itself once every 27 days
far side
a lot of cratures
less marina
thick crust
not seen from earth
asteroids
large pieces of rock in space
meteoroids
smaller asteroids
meteors
rocks going through the atmosphere
