Asthma Flashcards
Definition of asthma
Chronic inflammatory, episodic, reversible bronchospasm
Asthma classification and Tx
Intermittent = albuterol
Persistent (mild) = inhaled steroids
(moderate) = LABA
(severe) = Leukotriene modifiers
Etiologic agents of extrinsic asthma
IgE response to dust mites, cockroaches, animal protein, dusts, pollens, fungi, food
Definition of intrinsic asthma
Non-allergic mediated, infection triggered, IgE not elevated
Asthma can be induced from which drugs?
Aspirin, NSAIDS
Exercise-induced asthma
Symptoms AFTER exercise; cooling and drying of airways lead to histamine release
Nocturnal asthma
Caused by decline in circulating catecholamines and cortisol between midnight and 8 AM
3 triggers of asthma
Allergens, GERD, and URTI
Life-threatening asthma
Accessory muscle use; Death caused by diffuse mucous plugging of airways
PFTs in asthma
Low FEV1 that reverses, hyperinflation (elevated RV and TLC), DLCO normal
Metacholine challenge test
Not diagnostic; only shows airway hyperreactivity; rules out asthma
