Assumptions, strengths and weaknesses Flashcards
Looks at things like
reasoning, thought processes, decision making and judgement
Assumption 1 (cognitive reasoning)
Looking at mental processes is important in understanding human behaviour.
Behaviour and emotions can be explained in terms of the tole of thinking processes like attention, memory and language.
Assumption 2 (computers)
Humans are like computers and we use a tripartite structure (input, processing and output ).
Assumption 2. How are we like computers?
We receive, interpret and respond to info. This can be tested scientifically.
Assumption 3 (infer)
Information cannot be observed but can be measured i.e the mind cannot be observed but can be measured by looking at cognitive functions
Strength 1 (experimental method)
Approach mainly uses experiments
Strength 2 (evaluation)
Can be applied in psychology and thus is useful
Strength 3 (inferences)
Uses psychometric tests that help making inferences on cognitive functions that cannot be observed
Strength 3 (inferences)
Uses psychometric tests that help making inferences on cognitive functions that cannot be observed
Weakness 1 (evaluation- g)
It doesn’t take individual differences into account
Weakness 2 (re..)
Reductionist as it explains complex concepts in a simplistic manner
Weakness 3 (unscientific)
Is over hypothetical thus explains behaviour based on predictions that may not be tested scientifically e.g the mind
MS assumptions (2)
- Behaviour and emotions can be explained in terms of the role of thinking processes like attention, memory and language
- People process information like a computer in terms of input-process-output
