what does the A entail in ABCDE assessment
Airway
- Look: is airway patent (unobstructed) and able to maintain?, no support (self -ventillating)?
- Listen: any added noises?, can patient speak?
- Feel: feel airflow?
what does B entail in ABCDE assessment
Breathing
- Look: oxygenation - SpO2, respiratory rate, work of breathing (WOB), accessory muscles?, cough? sputum?
- Listen: auscultation
- Feel: expansion (r=l), tactile fremitus? percussion notes
what does the C entail in ABCDE assessment
Circulation
- heart rate
- blood pressure
- capillary refill
- temperature
- urine output
- fluid balance
- haemoglobin
- CRP
- WCC
- platelets
- cyanosis
- pallor
what does the D entail in the ABCDE assessment
Disability
- AVPU
- sedating medication?
- pain?
what does the E entail in the ABCDE assessment
Exposure
- attachments?
- oedema
- bruising/ skin integrity
- surgical sites/ wounds
- anything else
what does AVPU stand for
A = alert
V = alert to voice
P = alert to pain
U = unconscious
