Associations and Correlations Flashcards
1
Q
What is an association?
A
“If the value of one variable tells you something about the value of the other variable, then they are associated.”
2
Q
What is a Dependent (= response) Variable?
A
measures outcome of study
3
Q
What is an Independent (= explanatory) Variable
A
causes/explains change in dependent variable
4
Q
What is a positive association?
A
Increase in one variable means increase in other
5
Q
What is a negative association?
A
Increase in one variable means decrease in other
6
Q
What measures correlation?
A
Direction and strength of the linear relationship between two quantitative variables.
7
Q
What are properties of correlation?
A
•Always between -1 and 1 -1: strongest negative correlation 0: no relation 1: strongest positive correlation Not resistant to outliers Uses standardized values→no change in r, when changing units of measurement.
