Assignment 6 Flashcards
AGP
Accelerated Graphics Port. It is a type of expansion slot that has a bus width of 66-133 bits and a speed of 266-533MB/ps.
Drive speed
a measurement for the rate of hard drives and disk drives. This determines the time it takes a drive to find the right track, and get to the right place on the track.
IDE
Integrated Drive Electronics. An industry standard for hard disk drives.
EIDE
Enhanced IDE; IDE for hard drives larger than 504MB and CD ROMs.
Drive bay
an open area inside the system unit. A drive bay would be used for installing an extra drive.
Access time
what drive speed measures; the time a drive takes to find and get on to the right place of the right track, in response to requested data.
PCI
Peripheral Component Interconnect. A type of expansion slot developed since 1991, also used by the Pentium CPU design.
Port
used to connect any attached device to the motherboard. Usually appears as a hole in front or on the back of a computer.
SCSI
a special type of parallel port; stands for Small Computer System Interface. A SCSI port can allow 7-15 different devices to be attached to a single port.
Bus speed
the rate of how much data can be transferred by the bus. Bus speed has increased greatly over time in the past few years. Larger bus speed improves the quality of the bus.
Serial
serial devices can only send 1 bit at a time. They are still used in modern computer technology. Serial cables can be up to 1000 feet long.
Bus width
measures how much data can be transferred at a time. Like bus speed, bus width has also increased greatly over the past few years. Larger bus width could also improve the quality of the bus.
EISA
Extended Industry Standard Architecture; a type of expansion slot developed in the late 1980’s. It has a bus width of 16 bits and a speed of 32 MB/ps.
Parallel
a relatively advanced communication as to serial. Although unlike serial, cables of parallel ports must be kept no more than 50 feet to avoid transmission errors.
Expansion slot
an empty socket inside the computer which allows the user to add components to the system unit. These components can be a controller card, adaptor card, or an interface card.
