What is Biopsychosocial Assessment?

A

Is a tool that helps social worker gathers client information in a comprehensive, accurate, and systematic manner. It contains the following sections:
1. Biological section-
assess a client’s medical history,
developmental history,
current medications,
substance abuse history,
family history of medical illnesses.

ISSUES RELATED TO MEDICAL PROBLEMS SHOULD BE EXPLORED BECAUSE MENTAL HEALTH SYMPTOMS CAN EXACERBATE THEM. Referrals should be made to address medical concerns that are not being treated. Clients on medication should have a care coordinated with the treating provider and more should be known about the medications b/c side effects can also masks or exacerbate psychiatric symptoms or illnesses

Psychological section: assesses a clients present psychiatric illness or symptoms
History of the current psychiatric illness or symptoms
Past or current psychosocial stressors and mental status
Exploration of how the problem has been treated in the past
Past psychiatric medications
Family history of psychiatric and substance related issues

Social section focuses on a client systems and unique client context
Identify strengths or resources available for treatment planning
Sexual identity issues or concerns
Personal history
Family of origin history
Support system
Abuse history
Education\vocational history
Legal history
Relationship status and concerns
Clients spiritual beliefs and cultural traditions

Each issue may be reviewed for its relationship or impact with the presenting issue
