Assessment of Progress and VEs Flashcards
- Methods other than VEs - Transitional stage of labour
Describe Mexican cold legs theory
as body works harder, blood drawn from extremities due to it being needed by eg. placenta
anal flare (purple line) theory
and is it research based?
Vasocongestions ?
Yes it is research based - to do with line and dilitation
increased blood flow causes purple line to extend from anal margin to top of buttocks
Vasocongestion - swelling of bodily tissues
Rhombus of Michaelis
Kite shaped, included the sarcum and lower lumbar vertabrae
moves backwards and relaxes to allow fetus to pass through
Name some indications for a VE both AN and intrapartum
AN
- to exclude rupture of membranes
- IOL / stretch and sweep
intrapartum
- assessment of progress
- confirm resenting part / position
- ARM
- FSE
- fetal blood sampling
- exclude cord prolapse
Contradictions of a VE
- placenta previa - covering the OS
- PPROM / PROM
- malpresentation
- preterm labour (to not risk stimulating the cervix)
- bleeding
Why should bladder be empty for a VE?
Due to the presenting part and risk of being misplaced
Information to be gained from a VE
FGM
Cervix - position, consistency, effacement, dilitation , application
Membranes
Presenting part - station and position (sututres and fontanelles)
Caput
