Assessment of Kidney & Urine Flashcards
Color of diluted urine due to diuretic agents, alcohol consumption, diabetes insipidus, glycosuria, excess fluid intake, chronic kidney disease
COLORLESS TO PALE YELLOW
Color of urine due to pyuria, infection, or vaginal cream
YELLOW TO MILKY WHITE
Color of urine due to multiple vitamin preparations
BRIGHT YELLOW
Color of urine associated with Hemoglobin breakdown, red blood cells, gross blood, menses, bladder or prostate surgery, beets, blackberries, medications
PINK TO RED
Medications that causes a pink to red colored urine
- PHENYTOIN
- RIFAMPIN
- THIORIDAZINE
- CASCARA SAGRADA
- SENNA PRODUCTS
Color of the urine associated with use of dyes and pseudomonas species organisms
BLUE, BLUE GREEN
Color of the urine due to old RBCs, urobilinogen, bilirubin, melanin, extremely concentrated urine due to dehydration
BROWN TO BLACK
Color of concentrated urine due to dehydration, fever, bile, or excess bilirubin production
ORANGE TO AMBER
These tests are used to evaluate severity of kidney disease & to assess status of pt’s kidney function
RENAL FUNCTION TEST
Common types of renal function tests
- Renal concentration tests
- Creatinine Clearance
- Serum Creatinine
- BUN
This detects and evaluates progression of kidney disease. It measures volume of blood cleared of endogenous creatinine in 1 min which provides approximation of GFR
24-h Urine Creatinine Clearance
This test is done to measure degree of concentration of the urine
SPECIFIC GRAVITY
It is the end product of muscle energy metabolism
CREATININE
This test evaluates hydration status.
Elevated = hypovolemia
BUN to creatinine ratio
It is the most accurate measurement of the kidney’s ability to dilute and concentrate urine. It measures the number of solute particles in a kilogram of water.
