Assessment 2- Plate Tectonics Flashcards
Study
Who was the first scientist to write about the continental drift theory?
Alfred Wegener.
What did scientists find in the 1950-60’s when they mapped the ocean floor?
Tectonic plates.
How many major tectonic plates are there?
7
How far do tectonic plates move in 1 year?
Between 1-6 inches.
Where are earthquakes felt most intensly?
The epicenter.
What is continental drift?
All the continents used to be 1 land mass and are slowly drifting away from each other overtime.
What is seafloor spreading?
Rocky crust being formed at ocean ridges and spreading outwards.
What is a divergent boundary?
New crust is generated. Plates pull away from each other.
What is a convergent boundary? (subduction zone)
Crust is destroyed. One plate dives under the other.
What is a transform boundary?
Crust is neither produced or destroyed. Plates slide horizontally past each other.
What are the earth’s layers?
- Crust
- Lithosphere
- Asthenosphere
- Mesosphere
- Mantle
- Outer core
- Inner core
What is convection?
A way heat travels
What are the signs that a volcano is active or about to erupt?
Acidic water, water converted to sulfuric acid, hot springs increase temperature, seismic wave activity seen through machine called seismometer.
