Assessment Flashcards
What makes up the general criteria for Substance Use Disorder, Alcohol Use Disorder, and Stimulant Use Disorder?
- a cluster of cognitive, behavioral,
and physiological symptoms indicating that an individual continues using the
substance despite significant substance-related problems … - an underlying change in
brain circuits that may persist beyond detoxification, especially in individuals with
severe disorders. - Repeated relapse
- Intense craving when exposed to drug-related stimuli
What is screening?
screening procedures are meant to be overinclusive, to detect the possible presence of a problem and the need for further evaluation.
What is evaluation?
Provides much information about what is actually happening in a particular person’s life and substance use, why problems are emerging, and what treatment options would be most appropriate to try
What is diagnosis?
Involves determining whether a person currently meets predetermined
criteria for having a particular condition, which in turn may influence
eligibility for treatment.
When would you use biomarkers in assessment?
When honesty is in question; especially if person is coming from highly stigmatized background or is in denial.
Michigan Alcohol Screening Test (MAST)
questions tend to be more severely worded, and it might be better to pull some questions off when using it clinically according to Dr. Farmer. Some issues with validity
Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT)
If you want to give a quick assessment, Dr. Farmer recommends AUDIT. Psychometric properties are a little better. AUDIT has 4 dimensions of substance use. Also is time-focused.
AUDIT-C for women: does better on samples of women.
DUDIT for drug use
