Assessing renal function Flashcards
1
Q
What could a dysfunction of regulating body fluid volume cause?
A
Hypertension, oedema
2
Q
What could a dysfunction of regulating body fluid composition cause?
A
Electrolyte disorders, acid-base disorders
3
Q
What could a dysfunction of excreting metabolic waste & toxins cause?
A
Uraemia, drug toxicity
4
Q
What could endocrine dysfunction cause?
A
Anaemia, renal bone disease
5
Q
What are the indicators or renal decline?
A
- Proteinuria/albuminuria, haematuria - indicates damage
- eGFR/GFR, serum creatinine/urea - indicates function
6
Q
What does eGFR not take into account?
A
- Age
- Sex
- Body size - if increased muscle mass, eGFR too low. if decreased muscle mass (amputees), eGFR too high
7
Q
What is the equation for clearance?
A
Clearance = (urine production x substance conc. in urine)/ substance concentration in plasma
8
Q
What are routine measures of kidney function?
A
- Serum urea
- Serum creatinine
- eGFR
