Judgmental, threatening, unpredictable, verbally abusive. “Walking on egg shells”.
- Explosive phase
Physical, emotional or sexual abuse occurs.
- Honeymoon phase
Abuser apologizes, gives presents, promises to “never do it again”. Victim may drop charges, believing the situation won’t happen again. Cycle repeats
Risk factors for abuse of neglect of older adults
Dementia, physical dependency, social isolation, chronic health conditions.
Types of elder abuse
Financial, emotional, physical, neglect, abandonment, and sexual abuse
Staff education caring for patients with aggression or anger
Do not wear necklaces/things around neck, stay by door, watch for items in hands.
How to de escalate an angry patient
Provide limit setting and redirection, decrease stimuli.
Risk factors for suicide can include
White, isolation, over 50 years, job loss, chronic illness, etc.
Signs of impending suicide
Getting affairs in order, giving away prized possessions.
Nursing interventions for attempted suicide:
1:1 observation, place close to nurses station, remove all potentially harmful objects, make rounds frequently/search rooms.
With culturally competent care you want to
• Focus more on the culture than the ethnicity.
• Culturally competent care begins with identifying your own cultural beliefs and values
Delirium
Sudden and temporary confusion. Often reversible.
Dementia
A gradual decline in cognitive function and is not reversible.
Depression
persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest in activities, and changes in sleep and appetite.
