What is Aspirin’s mechanism of action?
A
Decrease inflammation, dilates peripheral vessels, decrease platelet aggregation, slows formation of blood clots

What are indications for Aspirin?
A
- mild to moderate pain/fever
- prevention of platelet aggregation
- acute coronary syndromes
- ischemic chest pain
- unstable angina
- prevention of MI or infarction

Contraindications to Aspirin
A
- Hypersensitivity
- GI bleed
- Acute ulcer
- Acute asthma
- Hemorrhagic stroke
- Bleeding disorders

Adverse reactions to Aspirin
A
- heartburn
- nausea and vomiting
- allergic reaction
- stomach irritation

A
325-650mg PO every 4 hours (instruct patient to chew)

not recommended for pediatric use in the pre-hospital setting

- Pregnancy safety: category C in the first and second trimesters; category D in the third trimester
- given as soon as possible to a patient with ACS

A
- Have you ever had a GI bleed?
- Do you have a bleeding disorder?
- listen to lung sounds for pulmonary edema*
