When do ([ph ], [th ], and [kh ]) get aspirated?
when they occur immediately before a stressed vowel (no sound in between), and there is no [s] in front of the voiceless stop, e.g. [phɒt]
When are Voiceless stops not aspirated:
i. after [s], e.g. [spɒt]
ii. if they occur before an unstressed vowel, [təˈmɑ:təʊ]
iii. if there is an approximant or lateral approximant between the stop and the vowel (and then the approximant or lateral approximant is considered voiceless as indicated by the ‘circle’ diacritic, e.g. [tɹ̥æp], [kl̥æp
