Asphyxia Flashcards
Define Asphyxia (RC)
an inadequate oxygenation of tissue
Name some types of asphyxia (RC)
-suffocation
-strangulation
-chemical
Define suffocation (RC)
the deprivation of oxygen in the environment or blockage of the external or internal air passages.
True or False:
There is a postmortem laboratory test for hypoxia (RC)
False
True or False:
Petechiae is only seen in the eyes (RC)
False
What is partial oxygen deprivation?(RR)
Hypoxia causes unconsciousness
What is the main component of asphyxia?(RR)
Respiratory, vascular and nervous
What is anoxia? (RR)
Means total oxygen deprivation may lead to death.
What is the lack of oxygen in the environment or as a result of an obstruction of the air passages?(RR)
Suffocation
On the scene what should you look for smothering cases?(RR)
Look for signs of a struggle but also any items that may have saliva on them.
What are the two main categories for asphyxia ? (TM)
Mechanical and chemical asphyxia
Define Hypoxia (TM)
Partial oxygen deprivation which can cause unconsciousness and is mainly seen with chronic cigarette smokers
What are the types of asphyxia? (TM)
Suffocation, mechanical, chemical, drowning, and strangulation.
What is positional asphyxia? (TM)
This is when the position of the body part or part of the body leads to airway restrictions, vascular compression, or breathing fatigue.
What is compression (traumatic) asphyxia? (TM)
This is basically compression of the chest with a heavy object. External pressure in the body that prevents physiological respiration.
