Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
What is asexual reproduction?
A form of reproduction that requires only one parent, so there is no fertilization or gametes like sperm and egg.
What is the result of asexual reproduction?
Genetically identical offspring.
Which organisms can asexual reproduction take place in?
Plants, fungi, bacteria, animals (starfish).
How can plants asexually reproduce?
Plants can produce runners or a cut part of the plant can be taken to produce roots and a whole new plant.
What are some advantages of asexual reproduction?
No energy is wasted on trying to find a mate. It leads to many identical offspring, which is useful in the agriculture world and production of crops. Organisms can quickly colonize a local area. Successful and useful traits are passed to the offspring.
What are some disadvantages of asexual reproduction?
No variation, so disease spreads quickly.
