Asepsis Flashcards
Infection
disease state that results from presence of a pathogen
Pathogen
disease-producing microorganism
Opportunistic Pathogen
causes disease only in a susceptible host
Virulence
ability to produce disease
Resident Flora
normal in one area of body, but can cause disease in another area of the body
Colonization
process by which strains of microorganisms become resident flora
Medical Asepsis
Clean technique: used to confine a specific organism to a specific area, limiting the number, growth, and transmission of microorganisms
Surgical Asepsis
Sterile technique: procedures used to keep objects or areas free from germs or any other forms of life
Used for procedures such as: surgery, surgical dressing changes, catheter insertion, central line insertion
Types of Infection: Local Systemic Bacteremia Septicemia Acute Chronic Nosocomial
Local: localized to a single area or organ Systemic: throughout the whole body Bacteremia: bacteria in the blood Septicemia: when you're sick Acute: short term Chronic: long term Nosocomial: hospital acquired
Endogenous
Originate from client’s themselves
Exogenous
Originate from the hospital environment & hospital personnel
Iatrogenic
The direct result of diagnostic or therapeutic procedures, such as IV line infection
