Asepsis ๐๐งช Flashcards
What does the condition of being sterile mean?
Complete absence if viable microbes, spores and viruses.
What are spores and what are they made of?
Spores are dormant structures that are highly resistant to common sterilants.
Formed when fungi and some gram positive bacteria are exposed to unfavourable conditions. Germinate into actively growing cells when exposed to favourable conditions
What is the definition of asepsis?
Refers to the complete absence of pathogenic microorganisms
What is terminal sterilisation?
Where product is sealed and sterilised in final container
Definition biocide
General term to describe a chemical agent that kills microorganisms and includes disinfectants, antiseptics and preservatives
Definition of disinfectants
Antimicrobial agents that are applied to non living objects to destroy microorganisms that are living in the objects
Definition antiseptic
Product used on skin with disinfectant properties and is non toxic and non irritant
Definition preservative
Included in pharmaceutical products to prevent microbial growth and spillage
What are the two types of disinfectants??
Oxidising and non oxidising
What are the factors that affect the activity of a disinfectant?
Physical- Ph, temp, contact time, concentration, organic material, inorganic material
Microbial- microbial bio burden, intrinsic resistance, acquired resistance exhibited by bacteria
Phenotypic adaptation- effects of nutrient limitation/growth rate/ biofilm formation.
