Asch’s Original Study - A03 Flashcards

1
Q

What is one evaluation strength for Asch’s research?

A

-P: there is other evidence to support his study.
-E: Lucas et al - asked participants to solve ‘hard’ and ‘easy’ math questions. Participants were given answers that were from the other 3 students (stooges).
-The students conformed more often when the questions were harder (agreeing with Asch’s higher difficulty higher conformity study).
-E:Showing Asch’s study’s validity and task difficulty is a correct variable in affecting conformity.

Q

What is one limitation evaluation point against Asch’s study?

A

P: Cross cultural studies
E: people in the western cultures (uk and America) are less likely to conform than people in Japan and Africa.
E: This therefore reduces validity of Asch’s study.

Q

What is one strength evaluation point for Asch’s study?

A

P: Task difficulty.
E: in another task, Asch made the comparison lines more similar- making it more ambiguous. This increased conformity.
E: this therefore increase reliability and validity of his research and study.

Q

What is another limitation evaluation point for Asch’s study?

A

P: It’s uneconomical and time- consuming.
E: Crutchfield- tested in separate booths, he was able to test several groups at once, unlike Asch who does it one at a time.
E: Therefore reduces economic validity of Asch’s original study, and reliability. Cause people such as Crutchfield to have to change the study.
