Asch Paradigm Flashcards
What 3 things in the experiment increase conformity
- How large the group is (5+ people)
- when the other members of the group are more powerful or knowledgeable
- when the task is more challenging
What decreases conformity in the experiment
When the responses are given privately by the participant
How many participants are there in the first experiment
There is only 1 participant and the rest of the group are actors
How many participants are there in the second version of the experiment
There is only one actor and the rest are real participants
What was the outcome of the first experiment
The participant copied the actors incorrect answer and conformed to their rest of the group.
This is because they felt under pressure from their peers and didn’t want to be made fun of by them
What was the outcome of the second experiment
The outcome is that the actor said the incorrect answer infront of the participants and they mocked and laughed at them for getting it wrong.
This is because they are conforming to how they feel they should behave as they believe their answer is correct due to the size of the group that said the same answer
How was the first experiment conducted
There was a group of actors and 1 participant in a room.
They all had to answer a simple question
The actors all went first and then the real participant went last
The real participant had the opportunity to answer what they really thought, however they copied the actors as there were more of them and they were conforming to their peers
How was the second version of the experiment conducted
There was a room of participants and one actor
They all had to answer a question
The participants went first and the actor was to answer last
The actor was told to answer incorrectly to everyone else
The rest of the group mocked them due to feeling they should conform to the rest of the group made fun
