What different surveys might you need to carry out in relation to work in a building potentially containing asbestos?

A

R and D Survey - Required where the premises or part of it needs upgrading, refurbishing or demolishing. Locates and identifies all ACM before structural work begins in a stated area or on stated equipment at the premises.

Asbestos Management Survey - To identify and manage asbestos containing materials in the normal operation and use of the premises.

A

Risk assessed and determined by the contractor

Minor and of short duration
- e.g. to remove asbestos insulating board as part of a refurbishment project

What is licenced asbestos work?

A

Higher risk work with asbestos must only be done with a licenced contractor. Licensable work is work:

  • where worker exposure is not sporadic or of low intensity
  • Where risk assessment cannot clearly demonstrate the control limit will not be exceeded
  • on asbestos coating
  • on asbestos insulation or asbestos insulating board where risk assessment demonstrates the work is not short duration
