What different surveys might you need to carry out in relation to work in a building potentially containing asbestos?
R and D Survey - Required where the premises or part of it needs upgrading, refurbishing or demolishing. Locates and identifies all ACM before structural work begins in a stated area or on stated equipment at the premises.
Asbestos Management Survey - To identify and manage asbestos containing materials in the normal operation and use of the premises.
What is notifiable non-licenced asbestos work?
Risk assessed and determined by the contractor
Minor and of short duration
- e.g. to remove asbestos insulating board as part of a refurbishment project
- Involving asbestos insulation

What is licenced asbestos work?
Higher risk work with asbestos must only be done with a licenced contractor. Licensable work is work:
- where worker exposure is not sporadic or of low intensity
- Where risk assessment cannot clearly demonstrate the control limit will not be exceeded
- on asbestos coating
- on asbestos insulation or asbestos insulating board where risk assessment demonstrates the work is not short duration
For licensable work how long before carrying out the work does the enforcing authority need to be informed?

The HSE, Local Authorities, and the Office of Rail and Road (ORR)
