AS PE Health, Exercise and Fitness Flashcards
What is the definition of fitness
Ability to cope with everyday demands of the environment.
What is the definition of health?
A state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
What components of fitness are considered to be concerned with physiological factors?
Health related components (SSSFP).
Stamina (Cardio respiratory endurance, Muscular endurance), strength, speed, power, flexibility.
These components may have an impact on a performers health and are concerned with how the body’s systems work.
Which components of fitness are said to be concerned with neuromuscular factors?
Skill related components (CRAB)
Coordination, reaction time, agility, balance)
These components allow a performer to successfully perform a skill
Name the three types of strength
Static strength (applying force to an immovable object) Dynamic strength (repeated contraction and relaxation of a muscle group) Explosive strength (rapid and maximal contraction of muscle fibres)
What is the definition of speed?
The rate at which the body is moved from one place to another
The range of movement around a joint refers to which component of fitness?
Flexibility
What is the definition of balance?
A state of stability or equilibrium achieved by keeping the body’s mass over the base of its support.
What are the two types of balance?
Static balance - a handstand in gymnastics
Dynamic balance - a cartwheel completed on the beam in gymnastics
What component is defined as a balanced and effective interaction of movements or body actions?
Coordination
Agility is defined as…
The ability to change the body’s direction efficiently and under control
Power is defined as….
The rapid application of muscular force. Strength and speed combined (speed x strength)
What is the definition of reaction time?
The time taken from the start of the stimulus to the start of the response
What is the definition of stamina?
Ability to delay the onset of fatigue
What are the two types of endurance (stamina)?
Cardio-respiratory endurance - efficiency of the lungs and the cardiovascular system in getting oxygen to the muscles over a period of activity.
Muscular endurance - the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to perform repetitive contractions over a period of time
