Aryepiglottic Sphincter Flashcards
aryepiglottic sphincter is AKA
AES
in my own words AES it is essentially
the ring of muscles at the top of your throat (epilarynx) that can open and close leading you to be able to make noises of different frequencies
what is the epilarynx
the tube above the tvfs formed by the aryepiglottic sphincter
narrowing the epilarynx creates a formant between
2-4kHz / 2000-4000Hz (kilohertz)
the bright and piercing change in voice quality associated with AES narrowing is the main feature of the voice quality
twang
AES narrowing makes the voice … without effort at the level of the TVFs
louder
why is constriction at the false vocal folds a risk with AES narrowing?
as the process is similar to swallowing
during the swallowing process there is closure at the level of the
FVF
TVF
Velum (high to stop food going up nose)
epiglottis
narrowing AES may trigger
FVF to become active and cause constriction
what can prevent the body from thinking it will swallow
having the velum in mid
having the velum in mid will
remind the body you are not about to swallow and will allow the TVF to vibrate without interference from the FVF
