Artificial selection and epigenetics Flashcards
Artificial selection
: the process by which humans choose individual organisms with certain phenotypic trait values for breeding
GMO - genetically modified organism
plants, animals, or microbes that have had their DNA changed using genetic engineering techniques
Cisgenic
using the DNA from the same species
Transgenic
DNA from a different species
Why is GMOs controversial
unsafe, unnatural
examples of GMO
Corn, Watermelon, Potatoes, banana
epigenetics
changes in genes (not mutations) due to environment (turned on/ off)
Natural Selection
genes change due to survival and resources
Sexual Selection
Genes are changing from reproduction
How does natural selection lead to adaptation
traits that can be passed down allow organisms to adapt to the environment better than other organisms of the same species.
examples of natural selection
evolving long necks has enabled giraffes to feed on leaves that others can’t reach, giving them a competitive advantage
