Artifacts Flashcards
Reverberation artifact cause
multiple echoes from sound wave bouncing between 2 reflectors
Refraction artifact
objects misplaced laterally
Axial resolution primarily affected by
Frequency
Lateral resolution primarily affected by
Beam width - affected by focal zone
Stitch artifact cause
Heart moving between cardiac cycles (eg breathing)
Velocity error artifact
Ultrasound assumes sound propagates through all structures at 1540m/sec so objects distorted if velocity differs
Near field reflection artifact
Additional images formed by strong acoustic signals close to transducer (eg apex obscured to rule out thrombus)
Sidelobe artifact
Generally arcuate
From strong reflectors outside beam generating echoes
Range ambiguity artifact cause and correction
Caused by structure distal to image sending back echo
Correct by changing depth
Enhancement artifact
brighter structures behind fluid filled structures
