Articular Movement (EXAM 1) Flashcards
1
Q
Osteokinematics
A
Observable movements of bones in space
2
Q
Spin
A
Pure bony rotational movement occurring around a defined mechanical axis
3
Q
Swing
A
Any multiplanar bony movement in diagonal or oblique patterns
4
Q
Pure Swing
A
- Cardinal plane movement (movement not simultaneous with a spin)
- Not really functional
5
Q
Impure Swing
A
Arcuate movement (rotation or spin is simultaneous with movement)
6
Q
Arthrokinematics
A
- Unobservable articular movements between adjacent joint surfaces (roll, glide, and spin)
- These accessory motions take place with all active and passive movements and are necessary for full, pain free range of motion
7
Q
Roll
A
- New points on one surface come into contact with new points on the opposing surface (like a tire rolling on the ground)
- Rolling only occurs when the two articulating surfaces are incongruent.
8
Q
Glide
A
- Translatory motion in which one constant point on one surface is contacting new points on the other surface.
- Pure gliding can occur when two surfaces are congruent and flat or congruent and curved.
- Glide only occurs involuntarily and can be referred to as translation or translatory glide
9
Q
3 Rules of Arthrokinematics
A
- Roll Rule
- Concave Rule
- Convex Rule
10
Q
Roll Rule
A
Roll always occurs in the direction of bone movement (ant/post or sup/inf)
11
Q
Concave Rule
A
In relationship to the concave surface, roll & glide occur in the same direction
12
Q
Convex Rule
A
In relationship to the convex surface, roll & glide occur in the opposite direction
