Article I
- Legislative Branch, congress granted power to make laws
- Legislature = bicameral, of house and senate
- Proposed piece of legislation/bill requires majority in each chamber to be law (senate and house can check each other)
- Reserves veto powers to the executive (president)
Article II
- Executive branch, president ensure laws are “faithfully executed”
a. Appoint administrators, negotiate treaties, commander in chief - 10 days to sign into or veto a bill
- 2/3 of house + senate can override veto
- Senate “advice and consent,” power to approve or reject treaties/appointments
Article III
-Judicial branch SCOTUS
- Congress power to create lower courts
- Courts able to decide on lawsuits abt constitution, national laws, and international treaties
Article IV
- State-to-state relations
- States respect the rulings nad laws and stuff of each other
- Congress ability to make new states
- Government ensures all states rep. democracies
Article V
Amendment process steps -
1st: propose amendment
2nd: ratify proposed amendment
1st method:
- 2/3 majority in both chambers, - proposal to states for ratification
2nd method: (unused)
- 2/3 of state legislatures petition congress for amendment, constitutional convention, approved proposal goes to states to ratify
- Amendment ratified by 3/4 of state legislatures OR 3/4 of specials onventions
Article VI
SUPREMACY CLAUSE
- New national gov. responsible for debts by the congress of the articles of confederation
- Constitution and laws/treaties under it = supreme law
- All national and state governments MUST uphold constitution
Article VII
Constitutional ratification
- special conventions of 9/13 states required to ratify
- Signed then standing congress sent to states, bypassing constitutional amendment in articles of confederation
