How many branches were in the AoC’s government?
One, a one house legislature (Congress)
How did the govt. shift after the Revolution?
The people did not want a king, so they tried to create a new govt.
Why did the states limit the power of the central govt.?
They didn’t want to risk giving too much power to a single person or group, so most of the power was with the states
What could the central govt. do? (5 things)
Deal with foreign countries and Native Americans outside the states; make laws; declare wars; coin/borrow $; run a postal service
What couldn’t the central govt. do? (4 things)
Regulate trade; enforce laws; collect taxes; raise an army
Why were there trade problems within the states?
Each state had their own trade policies, currencies, and tax laws, so it was confusing and difficult
Why did the AoC fail?
The central govt. was not given enough power to solve problems like economics, foreign affairs, rebellions, etc.
What were some foreign affair problems?
The US looked weak to other countries; British troops still occupied forts in the NW Territory (no power to declare war); the Spanish didn’t let Americans ship products down the Miss. River (which they controlled)
