Definite specific reference
Noun phrase refers to something which is for one reason or another identifiable in the context
Indefinite specific reference
Noun phrase refers to something not identifiable in the context
Anaphoric reference
The definite article refers backwards
Cataphoric reference
The definite refers forward
Situational reference
The noun phrase referent is identifiable in the immediate or wider situation (noun phrase is wider (f.ex. wardrobe), but something more specific is meant and both partners in dialogue know which (f.ex. the wardrobe upstairs))
