Q

What is the electoral college? Why was it created?

A

The electoral college is the group of Representatives and Senators (plus 3 delegates from Washington DC) that decide the President. These Delegates are elected by the people. The electoral college was created because the framers of the Constitution wanted: the states to have a role in the national elections, to protect the country from ill-informed voters, and to ensure that one part of the country wouldn’t have the power to choose the President over the wishes of the rest of the country.

19
Q

What determines how many electors each state gets?

A

It’s determined by adding the number of Representatives a state has to the number of Senators a state has. That’s the exact number a state gets. Washington DC also has 3 electors, as it’s the lowest amount a state can have.

20
Q

How does the candidate win presidency under the electoral college?

A

The people vote on who the electors should be, and the electors vote on who the President should be. If a president reaches 270 votes, they become the President.
