Arthropods Flashcards
Arthropod
invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages.
Molting
shed old feathers, hair, or skin, or an old shell, to make way for a new growth.
Pheromones
naturally occurring odorless substances the fertile body excretes externally, conveying an airborne signal that provides information to, and triggers responses from, the opposite sex of the same species.
Thorax
part of the body of a mammal between the neck and the abdomen,
Abdomen
part of the body of a vertebrate containing the digestive organs; the belly. In humans and other mammals, it is bounded by the diaphragm and the pelvis.
Cephalothorax
a tagma of various arthropods, comprising the head and the thorax fused together, as distinct from the abdomen behind.
Exoskeleton
rigid external covering for the body in some invertebrate animals, especially arthropods, providing both support and protection.
Cheliped
also named claw, nipper or pincer, is a pincer-like organ terminating certain limbs of some arthropods.
Malpighean tubes
slender tubes normally found in the posterior regions of arthropod alimentary canals.
Arachnid
class of joint-legged invertebrate animals, in the subphylum Chelicerata
Spiders
air-breathing arthropods that have eight legs and chelicerae with fangs that inject venom. They are the largest order of arachnids and rank seventh in total species diversity among all other orders of organisms.
Metamorphosis
process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.
Crustaceans
very large group of arthropods, usually treated as a subphylum, which includes such familiar animals as crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimp, krill and barnacles.
Insects
class of invertebrates within the arthropod phylum that have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body, three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes and one pair of antennae.
Antennae
Thin sensory appendages on the heads of insects.
Scorpions
8 legs, segmented tail with venomous stinger.
Swimmerets
normally found on the first five abdominal segments and typically terminate in paired oarlike branches. They function primarily for carrying the eggs in females and are usually adapted for swimming. Also called pleopod.
Green glands
one of a pair of excretory organs in some crustaceans that open at the base of each antenna.
Woodtick
infests wild and domestic animals, often found clinging to plants and responsible for transmitting spotted fever.
Grasshopper
Plant eating insect with long hind legs. Found in grassy plains.
Butterfly
an insect with two pairs of large wings that are covered with tiny scales, usually brightly colored, feed on nectar.
Housefly
common insect worldwide, health hazard cause they can contaminate food.
Mosquito
a slender long-legged fly with aquatic larvae. The bite of the bloodsucking female can transmit a number of serious diseases including malaria and encephalitis.
Crab
hidden entirely under a thorax. covered with a thick exoskeleton, and have a single pair of claws.
Lobster
Three of their five pairs of legs have claws, including the first pair, which are usually much larger than the others.
