Q

myriapoda

A
4 groups :
• chilopoda - centipedes
• diplopoda - millipeded
•pauropoda
•symphyla

14000 described species

origin in cambrian - 520 MYA
- many early terrestiral taxa were large

almost all modern taxa are terrestrial

Q

myriapoda : chilopoda

A
  • centipedes - largely active predators
  • one pair of legs per segment

scutigera and relatives have evolved the most rapid gait :

  • long legs
  • leg length increases down trunk
  • dorsal cuticle plates overlap segments
  • compound eyes ( indpendent origin to those in insects )
  • tracheal ‘lungs’ connected to the pericardum - unique organs
