Arthrology of the elbow wrist and hand Flashcards
What kind of joint is the humeroulnar joint ?
Hinge joint
What kind of joint is the humeroradial joint ?
plane/ gliding
What kind of joint is the proximal-radioulnar joint ?
pivot
What kind of joint is the distal radio-ulnar joint ?
pivot
What kind of joint is the Radiocarpal joint ?
ellipsoidal or condyloid
What kind of joint is the carpometacarpal joint ?
First: sellar/saddle
2nd-5th: plane gliding
What kind of joint is the Metacarpophalangeal joint?
ellipsoidal
What kind of joint is the interphalangeal joint ?
hinge
Where does the ulnar or medial collateral ligament of the elbow attach?
From the medial epicondyle of the humerus too the medial margin of the coronoid process and olecranon process
What is the function of the Ulnar collateral ligament of the elbow?
resists cubital valgus * important roll between 20-130 deg. of motion
What are the three bands of the ulnar collateral ligament ?
Anterior
Posterior
Transverse
What is the most commonly ruptured band of the ulnar collateral ligament?
Anterior band: usually ruptured at end range extension
What does the anterior bundle of the ulnar collateral ligament resist?
Primarily resists elbow valgus between 20-120 deg. of motion
taught w/terminal extension
secondary restraint at end range flexion beyond 120 deg.
strongest
What does the posterior band of the ulnar collateral lig. restrict?
Also resists elbow valgus : acts as a co restraint at end range / terminal flexion with anterior band
2nd restraint to valgus stress at lesser deg. of flexion
taught at 55 deg. of elbow flexion
weakest
What is the purpose of the transverse /oblique bundle of the ulnar collateral ligament
deepens socket for trochlea of the humerus
What are the attachments for the annular ligament?
From the anterior margin of the radial notch of the ulna to the posterior margin of the radial notch of the ulna surrounding the head of the radius
What is the function of the triangular fibrocartilage complex ligament?
- Stabilize distal radial joint by binding the radius and ulna
- Transfer compression forces from hand and wrist to the forearm
- Cushion ulnar side force transmission
What is the function of the annular ligament?
stabilizes proximal radial ulna joint / radial head
What are the components of the Triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC)
- Biconcave fibrocartilage disc
- Palmar Ulnocarpal ligament
3.Ulnar collateral ligament
What is the function of the annular ligament?
Stabalizes proximal radioulnar joint
What is the attachments of the interosseous membrane?
from interosseous border of radius to interosseous border of ulna
What is the attachment of the lateral / radial collateral ligament of the elbow?
Lateral epicondyle to the annular ligament
What is the function of the Transverse carpal ligament?
Prevents bowstringing of the tendons of the FPL,FDS,FDP
What is the attachments of the transverse carpal ligament?
From the pisiform and hook of hamate to scaphoid and trapezium
What is the function of the Volar/Palmar and Dorsal radiocarpal ligaments?
Stabalize the carpal bones on the radius
What are the attachments of the radoiocarpal ligaments?
dorsal/volar surface of the distal radius to the first two rows of the carpal bones
What is the function of the ulnar collateral lig. of the wrist ?
resists radial deviation
What is the attachments of the ulnar collateral lig. of the wrist?
From the ulnar styloid process to the triquetrum
What is the function of the radial collateral lig. of the wrist ?
resists ulnar deviation
What is the attachments of the radial collateral lig. of the wrist?
radial styloid process to scaphoid
Attachments of the collateral lig. of the metacarpophalangeal joints
From the head of the metacarpals to the base of the proximal phalanx
Injury to the TFF
FOOSH
extension with ulnar compression
forced radial or ulnar deviation
strong distraction force
disc and ligament damage
