arterys and veins Flashcards
What has a valve in it
viens
Why do veins need valves
to reduce blood back flow
arteries
Carry blood away from the heart
carry oxygenated blood (except for pulmonary artery)
Have which muscular walls that contain elastin fibres to withstand high pressure of blood (but no valves)
narrow lumber to maintain high pressure
Arteries expand when the pressure of the blood rises and recoil when the pressure falls
Veins
Carry blood towards the heart from the body
carry deoxygenated blood (except pulmonary vein)
Capillaries
Small numerous blood vessels found in all tissues
They have thin walls so substances can easily diffuse in and out of them
have leaky walls so blood can leak out and form tissue fluid surrounding cells
What is an arteriole
a tiny artery
What is a venue
a mini vien
lymph
Lymph is blood that leaks from a capillaries and turns into tissue fluid and then turns into lymph
