Artery Pathways Flashcards
Anterior Tibial artery
Branch of the popliteal artery
Pierces through the space b/w the tibia and head of fibular, superior to the interosseous membrane (anterior)
Runs down inferior to anterior compartment of leg (deep to tib ant)
Terminates as the dorsal pedis artery
Posterior tibial artery
Branch of the popliteal artery (starts at popliteal fossa)
Descends inferiorly along the posterior aspect of the tibia b/w soleus and deep compartment of muscles
Runs posterior to the medial malleoli
Terminates on the plantar surface of the foot as the medial & lateral plantar arteries
Brachial artery
Continuation of the axillary artery
Travels inferiorly along the medial aspect of the arm into the cubital fossa
Splits into the radial & ulnar arteries just distal to the cubital fossa
Pulse: palpable in the arm medial to the tendon of biceps brachii
Fibular artery
Branch of the posterior tibial artery after passing the lower edge of the popliteus muscle
Runs laterally towards the posterior fibula and descends inferiorly
Terminates as the calcaneal anastomosis w/ a branch of the posterior tibial artery
