Arteriosclerosis Flashcards
1
Q
Arteriosclerosis
A
hardening of the arterioles
- less compliant, less elastic, higher blood pressure
2
Q
Hyaline arterioslcerosis
A
- high bp causes proteins in blood to enter blood vessel wall
- walls become lined with proteins
- walls are stiffer and thicker
- Narrow lumen
- Blood flow is reduced to organ
3
Q
Hyperplastic arteriosclerosis
A
- Hardening of blood vessels due to high bp
- blood vessels compensate by adding more layers of smooth muscle
- Reduces diameter of lumen
4
Q
Monckberg medial sclerosis
A
- Calcium deposits are found in muscular layer
- Hardening of blood vessel
- Diameter is not affected
- Blood outflow is not affected - mainly asymptomatic
5
Q
Clinical presentation of ateriosclerosis
A
- Kidneys
• Arterionephrosclerosis -> Chronic renal failure
• lack of blood supply to glomerulus causes it to scar - Chest pain and angina
- Leg pain
- Stroke like symptoms
6
Q
Diagnosis of arteriosclerosis
A
- Weakened pulse
- Bruits
- Angiogram showing vessel narrowing
