arteries veins and capillaries Flashcards
summaries our circulatory system
blood is pumped from the heart to the lungs where it collects oxygen
the blood then returns to the heart and is pumped around the whole body where it delivers the oxygen to the body cells
what do arteries do?
carry very high blood pressure blood from the heart to the organs of the body
Structure of arteries
describe a property and it’s function
have very thick muscular walls
this allows them to withstand the very high pressure of the blood
how does blood travel through the arteries?
blood travels through the arteries in surges every time the heart beats(that surge can be felt in the wrist as your pulse)
correctly label an artery diagram
- thick wall
- muscle
- elastic fibres
- capillaries
name the function of elastic fibres.
they stretch when the surge of blood passes through and then recoil in between surges, which keep the blood moving
once blood is in the organs, the blood flows through the…
capillaries
what happens as blood passes through the capillaries?
substances such as glucose and oxygen diffuse from the blood to the cells
carbon dioxide diffuses from the cells back to the blood
why might the diffusion path of capillaries be short
have very thin walls
the diffusion path of capillaries are short.
why might this be beneficial?
the thin membrane allows substances to diffuse rapidly between the blood and the body cells
once the blood has passed through it’s organs, it now makes its way back where and how.
back to the heart in veins
name a problem present when the blood travels back to the heart in veins
the blood is now travelling slowly and at LOW PRESSURE. That means that it could stop or even go backwards.
name a Structure of veins are
reason for this structure:
Valves to stop blood from flowing backwards
OR
veins have a thin wall this is because
the blood pressure is low so the wall doesn’t need to be thick
name a Structure of veins and reason for structure

when do valves open?
when the blood is flowing in the right direction then the valves open to allow the blood to flow through
