Arteries of Proximal Upper Limb Flashcards
Where does the first part of the axillary artery begin and end?
It begins at the lateral border of the first rib and ends at the medial border of the pectorlais minor.
What artery originates from the first part of the axillary artery?
Superior thoracic artery
What does the superior thoracic artery supply?
1st and 2nd intercostal spaces and superior part of serratus anterior
What are the branches of the second part of the axillary artery?
Thoraco-acromial artery and lateral thoracic artery
What are the branches of thoraco-acromial artery?
Pectoral, deltoid, clavicle, and acromion
What is the course of the superior thoracic artery?
Runs anteromedial lay along superior border of pectorlais minor then passes between it and pectorlais major to thoracic wall
What is the course of the thoraco-acromial artery?
Curls around superomedial border of pectoralis minor, pierces costocoracoid membrane (clavipectoral fascia)
What is the course of the lateral thoracic artery?
Descends along axillary border of pectoralis minor
What does the lateral thoracic artery supply?
Lateral aspect of breast
Where does the second part of the axillary artery begin and end?
Posterior pectorlais minor to lateral border of pectorlais minor
What are the branches of the third part of the axillary artery?
Subscapular artery (largest branch of axillary artery), anterior circumflex and posterior circumflex humeral artery
Where does the third part of the axillary artery begin and end?
Lateral border of pectorlais minor to inferior border of teres major
What is the course of the circumflex humeral arteries?
Encircle surgical neck of humerus while anastomosing with each other laterally (posterior artery is the larger branch and passes through the quadrangular space)
What is the course of the subscapular artery?
Descends from level of inferior border of subscapularis along lateral border of scapula; forms terminal branches circumflex scapular artery and thoracodorsal artery
What is the origin of the suprascapular artery?
Thryocervical trunk or as a direct branch from the subclavian artery
