Arrangement Of Electrons In The Atom Flashcards
How emission line spectra occur
According to Bohr electrons travelled around nucleus in a fixed orbit in their ground state
They are promoted to a higher energy level or are in excited state
This is an unstable state and electrons drop back to their ground state releasing energy in the form of light
Difference between the 2 energy levels is equal to the frequancy of light in the spectrum by planks constant
E1 - E2 = hf
Energy level
A fixed wenergy value that an electron in atom might have
Evidence for energy levels
Fixed, discrete frequencies of light are emitted , the electrons bus be restricted to certain definite energy levels
Why possible to distinguish between elements by just emmision line spectra
Each element has a unique line spectrum due to the different arrangement & disrabuation of energy levels leading to different electron transitions
Bohr’s theory limmitations
1: It worked well with hydrogen but did not account for the many more lines in the emission line spectra of atoms with many electrons
2: de Broglie suggested that all moving particles had a wave motion associated with them , this was impossible to detect in larger objects and should be impossible to detect in small particles such as electrons therefore Bohr’s theory that electrons travelled in a fixed orbit around the nucleus can’t be true. He was proven right
Heisenberg’s uncertenity principle
It is impossible at the same time to measure the velocity + position of an electron
Orbital
A region in space where there is a high possibility of finding an electron be
