Aromatics Flashcards
1
Q
What is the major property of aromatic compounds?
A
They are cyclic and have their π bond delocalised over the entire ring which stabilised the π electron delocalisation.
2
Q
Give the common names for aromatics with the following functional groups: OH CH3 NO2 COOH NH2
A
Phenol Toulene Nitrobenzene Benzoic acid Aniline
3
Q
How is the ortho-meta-para system used?
A
ortho (o) substituents are at the 2nd position
meta (m) substituents are at the 3rd position
para (p) substituents are at the 4th position
4
Q
What is the functional group called when benzene is the substituent?
A
Phenol or aryl group
5
Q
What is the process of electrophilic aromatic substitution using bromine?
A
- Electrophile produced in bromination by splitting halogen into halide ions.
- Halide ion (Br+) substitutes with a H+ ion, producing HBr and adds a Br species to the ring.
- The electrophile must be powerful for this reaction (i.e Br or OH-).
This is due to the resistance of the aromatic ring to lose its delocalisation.
