Armando Hasudungan Chemistry Flashcards
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A homogeneous mixture is one in which all the species are of the same type. (ie all liquids in a solution).
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A heterogeneous mixture is one in which the species are of physically distinct states (ie like a rock in water).
What is Avogadro’s number?
6.022 x 10^23
Number of molecules/atoms in a mole.
What is the only metal that is not solid at RTP?
Mercury is a liquid at RTP.
What is group one also known as?
Group one is known as the alkaline metals.
What is group two known as?
Group two is known as the alkaline earth metals.
What is the trend as you move right and up the periodic table?
- increasing ionisation energy
- increasing magnitude of electron affinity
- increasing electronegativity
- decreasing atomic radius
What is Heisenburg’s uncertainty principle?
We cannot know simultaneously both the position and momentum of any particle
What are the different quantum numbers?
- principle quantum number
- Azimithal quantum number
- magnetic quantum number
- spin quantum number
What letters represent the principle quantum number?
n represents the principle quantum number.
What letters represent the Azimithal quantum number?
l represents the Azimithal quantum number
What letters represent the magnetic quantum number?
ml represents the magnetic quantum number.
What letters represent the spin quantum number?
ms represents the spin quantum number.
What is the principle quantum number?
The energy of an electron in an atom.
So what is the principle quantum number representing?
The principle quantum number tells us which electron shell the electron will be found in.
What is the Azimithal quantum number?
Distinguishes between orbitals of a given (n) having different shapes.
So what does the Azimithal quantum number represent?
The Azimithal quantum number tells us the specific subshell.
What is the magnetic quantum number?
Distinguishes orbitals of given energies (n) & shape (l) by having different orientations in space.
(tells us the number of each type of orbital)
What is the spin quantum number?
The electrons occupying an orbital can either have spin up or spin down. And so only two electrons max can fit in each orbital.
How many electrons can the s subshell hold?
2
How many electrons can the p subshell hold?
6
How many electrons can the d subshell hold?
10
How many electrons can the f subshell hold?
14
What is Hund’s rule?
The lowest energy arrangement of electrons in a subshell is obtained by putting electrons into separate orbitals of the subshell with the same spin before pairing electrons.
What is a dipole-dipole interaction?
An attraction between partial charges of polar molecules (electronegativity).
