Arm Flashcards
what is a holstein-lewis fracture?
spiral fracture of the distal one-third of the humeral shaft, often a/w radial nerve neuropraxia
which muscle recovers first in a radial nerve palsy?
brachioradilais
which muscle recovers last in a radial nerve palsy?
extensor indicis
what structures are at risk in the anterior approach to the humerus?
proximal: axillary nerve, humeral circumflex artery
distal: radial nerve, musculocutaneous nerve
what structures are at risk in the lateral (Kocher) approach to the elbow?
PIN, radial nerve
what structures are at risk in the posterior approach to the elbow?
ulnar nerve
what is the terrible triad of the elbow?
coronoid fracture, radial head fracture, and elbow dislocation
what sort of instability is a/w a fracture of the anteromedial facet of the coronoid?
posteromedial rotatory instability
where are the forces typically directed to cause a terrible triad elbow injury?
valgus and supination
mason type 1 fracture
radial head, nondisplaced or minimally displaced (<2 mm), no mechanical block to rotation
mason type 2 fracture
radial head displaced >2 mm or angulated, possible mechanical block to rotation
mason type 3 fracture
radial head, comminuted and displaced, mechanical block to motion
mason type 4 fracture
radial head fracture with associated elbow dislocation
what is a greenspan view on xray?
radiocapitellar
where does the PIN cross the proximal radius?
anterior to posterior within the supinator muscle 4cm distal to the radial head
