Arguments of Science and Other Flashcards
What are six points?
The Big Bang Theory Evolution and Natural Selection Nietzsche Feuerbach Freud Problems with Miracles
The Big Bang Theory
13.7 billion years ago all the matter in the universe was concentrated into a single incredibly tiny part which enlarged rapidly in a hot explosion and still enlarging today
There is lots of scientific evidence but depends on one’s belief in science and this theory
Who came up with Evolution and Natural Selection
Darwin
Evolution and Natural Selection
Many people believe evolution and natural selection are more logical explanations for the existence of humanity. Charles Darwin believed that in order to survive, life forms must adapt (evolve) to their changing environment or die. The strongest and fittest will evolve maintaining the existence of that particular species
How old does Evolution believe the world is? How old does creationism believe the world is?
Evolution believes Earth is 4.5 billion years old
The biblical age of the earth and universe of about 6,000 years
Nietzsche
believing that God is simply a kind of ‘superstition’
To Nietzsche, the concept of God only exists in the minds of his followers
When people started going against the traditional Christian beliefs, God metaphorically died
Feuerbach
believing that God is ‘made up’
Humans created God through their own imagination
Freud
believing that God is just a ‘wish’ or ‘dream’
God is an illusion that was made as a comfort to humans as a fatherly figure
Problems with Miracles
Miracles are acts of God that apparently break the laws of nature
There could be other, better explanations for what appear to be miracles
Sometimes a person may recover unexpectedly from an illness
At other times, apparently miraculous events are simply coincidences, not God intervening in people’s lives
How would Christians respond to the Big Bang Theory?
The creation story in Genesis starts by God saying ‘Let there be light’ and so many Christians see this as God causing the Big Bang which was his way of starting creation
The seven-day creation is seen by many as a poem not an historical account
How would Christians respond to Evolution and Natural Selection?
Christians believe humanity is special, made to be able to connect spiritually with God. Although they would not normally believe in evolution they would accept we have developed in skills, thinking and even posture
They point out that there are far too many missing links in the chain of evolutionary theories to be acceptable
