Arguments of Design Flashcards
Who came up with the Teleological Argument?
William Paley
Explain the Teleological Argument
Paley used the analogy of a watch - it takes intelligence and thought to design a watch
The universe shows evidence of design - e.g. fibonacci sequence in nature
Only God could have intelligence and thought enough to design an intrinsic, complex and beautiful world
Therefore, as the universe exists, God exists
How can the Teleological Argument strengthen your belief in God?
Some people believe that it is unlikely that we cane to be through chance
The universe must have been designed
What are the flaws with this argument?
You could argue that evolution and natural selection has scientific evidence
Why would God make us with flaws? Why not make a perfect human model?
Human beings are not watches, they change and reproduce etc…
Watches are man-made, they break and kink
Inductive leap: the complexity of the watch doesn’t equal the complexity of the universe
Who designed God?
How can the Teleological Argument weaken your belief in God?
Eventually we could have been formed - even the unlikely is possible
The flaws with the theory
