ARDS and NRDS Flashcards
What does ARDS stand for?
Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome
What does NRDS stand for?
Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome
What is ARDS?
This is a type of respiratory failure characterised by rapid onset of widespread inflammation of the lungs
What is ARDS?
This is a type of respiratory failure characterised by rapid onset of widespread inflammation of the lungs

What is ARDS?
This is a type of respiratory failure characterised by rapid onset of widespread inflammation of the lungs
What causes ARDS?
This is usually caused by injury to the lungs, such as in sepsis, severe trauma or pneumonia
Describe the pathophysiology of ARDS
Injury causes inflammation
The damages blood vessels, leading to increased permeability of alveolar capillaries, leading to fluid accumulation in the alveoli
How will ARDS usually present?
Dyspnoea
Tachypnoea
Bilateral lung crackles
Low SpO2
What are some investigations that can be performed in ARDS?
ABGs
CXR
What are the management options of ARDS?
Oxygen
Mechanical ventilation
What is NRDS?
This is a respiratory distress syndrome caused by a deficiency in surfactant at birth
