Archeology is using clues to find out things from the past and is the act of physically looking for objects (artefacts) from the past. Artefacts are defined as manmade objects from past.

The layers of excavation on a site are called stratas.

The closer the object is to the bottom the older it is, the closer the object is to the surface the newer it is.
