Archaeologists Flashcards
Explain how archaeologists come to discover sites ?
Archaeologists come to discover sites from aerial photography.
Name 3 items that a archaeologist might use?
A trowel, a brush, a toothbrush, a sieve etc.
What are two methods used by archaeologists used to date objects on a site ?
Carbon-14 dating and dendrochology
What is dendrochology?
It is the study of tree rings, this is when you can tell the age of the tree by how many tree rings it has, each ring represents a year of the tree’s growth.
What is Carbon-14 dating?
It is another way to find out the age of something found in an archaeologists dig. When a living thing like a plant human or animal dies the amount of carbon-14 decreases, allowing archeologist to work out how old it is.
How did archaeologists seal off the area?
To seal of the area they firstly removed the topsoil. Then the site is divided into different squares.A site grid is drawn, with each square in the grid given a letter and number. The exact location of any artefact that is found is clearly marked on the grid.
What is aerial photography?
Aerial photography is photographs that are taken from the air that would show ancient remains that are not visible from the ground.
What are metal detectors?
Metal detectors are used to pick up objects underground.
What is field walking?
Field walking: walking over the site and looking carefully for any tiny objects that may be of interest
What is rescue of salvage archaeology?
Sometimes archaeological sites are discovered by accident as a result of ground being disturbed due to development such as building or pipe laying. In such cases archaeologists must move quickly and save as much evidence from the past before the site is destroyed. This is known as rescue or salvage archaeology.
