Arachnoid Mater & Pia Mater Flashcards
Define arachnoid matter
A delicate, non-vascular membrane
How many layers does the arachnoid mater have? Are they continuous or discontinuous?
Two, one continuous & one discontinuous
–Continuous layer, is directly opposed, but not attached to the meningeal layer of the dura
–Discontinous layer, consisting of attachments from the outer arachnoid layer to the pia mater
Define Arachnoid Trabecuale
Delicate strands of connective tissue connecting the arachnoid matter to the Pia Mater.
—they are found in the subarachnoid space with CSF
What is the “potential space” located between the dura and the arachnoid called?
The Subdural Space
True or False:
The arachnoid and the dura are not attached
TRUE
Venous bleeding into space between the Dura and the Arachnoid is termed what?
A subdural hematoma
How can a subdural hematoma occur?
Traumatic occurences such as whiplash and shearing forces will tear bridging veins between the Dura and The Arachnoid
What is the term for
“Small extensions of arachnoid membrane”
Arachnoid Granulations
Where can arachnoid granulations be identified?
Protruding through and along the Superior Sagital Sinus
What is the function of Arachnoid Granulations?
Function as a “one way” gate for the uptake of CSF into the venous vascular drainage of the brain
What is the space between the Pia Mater and Arachnoid Mater called?
Subarachnoid space
—it contains CSF
What are the most notable Cisterns?
- ) Cisterna Magna (Cerebellomeduallary cistern)
- ) Lumbar Cistern
What are enlarged areas of subarachnoid space reffered to as?
Cisterns
In what layer of the meninges can arterial and venous branches that supply the coritcal regions of the brain be found?
The Pia Mater
Bleeding in the Pia Mater region is termed what?
Subarachnoid hemorrhage
(can be either venous or arteral)
