aquatic Flashcards
contraindications to aquatics (7)
Open wounds/recent surgery
Tracheotomy
Decompensated CHF or unstable angina
Active infection/fever (water, droplet, and airborne)
Severe respiratory dysfunction
Bleeding disorders
Severe PVD
Precautions to aquatics
Small open wounds and lines, G-tubes and suprapubic appliances
Cover with waterproof dressing
Colostomy
Bladder and bowel disorders
Menstruation or vaginal bleeding
Need internal protection
Neurological disorders
Ataxic patient: may have increased motor control difficulties
Seizure disorders
Careful with epilepsy; Ensure compliant with meds
Respiratory disorders
Lung expansion may be inhibited
Cardiac dysfunction
Increased work for CHF and DM II
Fear of water
temperature for aquatics
Cool temps for higher intensity exercise (76-82˚F)
Warm temps for mobility, flexibility, and muscle relaxation (83-100˚F)
temp for ruthmoid arthritis
warm
MS temp
cold
spinal cord temp
warm
spacticity for spinal chord temp

buoyancy-assisted position
seated or upright
buoyancy-supported position
supine
Buoyancy-assisted
vertical movement directed parallel to vertical forces of buoyancy
Buoyancy-supported
Horizontal movement with vertical forces of buoyancy eliminating or minimizing need for support
Buoyancy-resisted
Movement against or perpendicular to vertical forces of buoyancy, creating drag
Buoyancy-superresisted
Use of equipment generates resistance by increasing the total surface area moving through water by creating greater drag.
CV response in aquatics
Dampened HR elevation, ventilation, and VO2max
